His boat was completely at the mercy of the weather and was in grave danger of sinking. As huge waves crashed into the boat he vowed to God that if he ever reached land safely he would build a a more accessible church. Fortunately, the storm abated and he survived. When he returned to Cawdor Castle he instructed that work on a new church begin immediately and the building was erected the same year in its present position.

[Crathes castle 0806219232.jpg]
Crathes castle 0806219232.jpg

Comments: aerial photo,Crathes Castle,North East scotland. Crathes sits on land given as a gift to the Burnett of Leys family by King Robert the Bruce in 1323. In the 14th and 15th century the Burnett of Leys built a fortress of timbers on an island they made in the middle of a nearby bog. This method of fortiification, known as a crannog, was common in the Late Middle Ages. Construction of the current tower house of Crathes Castle was begun in 1553 but delayed several times during its construction due to political problems during the reign of Mary Queen of Scots. Crathes castleIt was completed in 1596 by Alexander Burnett of Leys, and an additional wing added in 18th century. Alexander Burnett, who completed the construction of Crathes, began a new project, the early 17th century reconstruction of nearby Muchalls Castle. That endeavour was completed by his son, Sir Thomas Burnett. Crathes Castle served as the ancestral seat of the Burnetts of Leys until gifted to the National Trust for Scotland by the 13th Baronet of Leys, Sir James Burnett in 1951. A fire damaged portions of the castle (in particular the Queen Anne wing) in 1966..history from Wiki.

[Dunnottar castle 0708095370.jpg]
Dunnottar castle 0708095370.jpg

Comments: Aerial photo,Dunnottar castle,Scotland. The site on which the Castle sits has been inhabited since Pictish times although an exact date is not known. In the 5th Century St Ninian brought Christianity to the Picts, and chose Dunnottar as a site for one of his chain of Churches. During the 9th Century King Donald II was killed defending Dunnottar Castle from a Viking invasion. However his death was in vain and the Vikings seized and destroyed the Castle. in the 12th Century Dunnottar Castle became a Catholic settlement with the first stone chapel being consecrated in 1276. Dunnottar Castle was home to one of the most powerful families in Scotland, the Earls Marischal, from the 14th century when Sir William Keith, the 1st Earl Marischal, built his Tower House, also known as the Keep. The Earl Marischal was an office bestowed on the Keiths by James II. The role was one of the three great offices of State, along with the Constable and the Steward. The Earl Marischal had specific responsibility for ceremonial events, the Honours of Scotland and for the safety of the King's person within parliament. Consequently it was not unusual for the monarchy, including Mary Queen of Scots, to spend time and stay at Dunnottar. Open to visitors, http://www.dunnottarcastle.co.uk/

[Dunvegan Castle 0809170370x.jpg]
Dunvegan Castle 0809170370x.jpg

Comments: aerial photo Dunvegan Castle Skye Scotland. The castle is situated on an upstanding mass of partly columnar basalt approximately 30 feet in height arising from the shores of Loch Dunvegan. Around it originally the sea ebbed and flowed. Now after centuries of natural deposits of silt, and assisted by the modern needs of supplying an entrance from the land, the sea has receded from that side of the Castle. A feature which gave Dunvegan Castle and those within its great strength, was the existence of a fresh water well. With this priceless resource added to the impregnability of its position, Dunvegan Castle presented a forbidding obstacle to the enemies of the Chiefs of MacLeod. Today the Castle has a unified design with Victorian dummy pepper-pots and defensive battlements running the whole length of the roof line. This 'romantic restoration' was carried out by the 25th Chief between 1840 and 1850 to the plans of Robert Brown of Edinburgh at a total cost of £8,000. Underneath this outer skin however there remains a series of complete buildings, each of a different date.

Comments: Aerial photo Grandtully Castle , just East of Aberfeldy by the River Tay, a tall and shapely tower-house of the later s 6th century, but with a much older nucleus and later additions. It is a seat of the Steuart-Fothringham family, the Stewarts having been here since the late 4th century, descending from Alexander 4th High Steward of Scotland. In 1626 Sir William Stewart, Sheriff of Perth, made various alterations, especially to the picturesque turreted roof-line. Occupying a strategic position, Grandtully was much in demand as a headquarters for commanders, Montrose, General Mackay, Argyll, Mar (of the '15) and Prince Charles Edward all using it. An officer of Mackay's is said to have been shot dead in one of the angle-turrets, the blood allegedly permanently staining the floor. More recently, the famous Admiral Earl Beatty was tenant here; and another shooting-tenant, the Maharajah Duleep Singh, distinguished himself one August Twelfth by personally shooting no fewer than 220 brace of grouse in one day.

[Huntingtower castle Perth 080923 0503x.jpg]
Huntingtower castle Perth 080923 0503x.jpg

Comments: aerial photo, Huntingtower Perth Scotland This well preserved castle is popular with tourists, not just because of its proximity to the "Fair City" of Perth but also as a result of the romantic story of the "Maiden's Leap" across the space between the battlements of its two towers. The Earl of Gowrie's daughter is said to have been visiting her lover in his bedroom in one tower and, fearing that she was about to be discovered by her mother, leapt across to the second tower and her own chamber. She eloped the next night! The Ruthven family who owned the castle, took their name from the barony of Ruthven, near Perth. Thor and his son Swein came to the area towards the end of the 12th century. Like most other landowners, Walter Ruthven was forced to sign the Ragman Roll of English King Edward I in 1296 but he also assisted William Wallace at the siege of Perth and in the re-capture of Jedburgh Castle from the English. The original tower house dates from the 15th century and a second tower was built later, three metres west of it. It is possible that one tower housed the first Lord Ruthven and the other was allocated to his son. It was not until the late 17th century that the two buildings were connected with the addition of more apartments between the two. The building was originally named "Ruthven Castle" The third Lord Ruthven was a leading supporter of the Protestant Reformation. In 1565 he entertained Mary Queen of Scots and her husband, Lord Darnley, at Huntingtower during their honeymoon. But he was also one of the ringleaders in the murder at the Palace of Holyroodhouse of David Riccio, the Queen's favourite. In 1582, a group of nobles, including Lord Ruthven, kidnapped the young King James VI and held him captive for ten months in Ruthven castle. The King and the Ruthven family were later involved in 1600 in the "Gowrie Conspiracy" in which the 3rd Earl of Gowrie seems to have plotted again against King James. Gowrie was killed and later in the year the Gowrie name was "proscribed" or banned by the Scottish Parliament. The castle was taken over by the crown and renamed "Huntingtower". Visitors to the castle (now owned by Historic Scotland) can climb to the top of both of the original buildings and look down on the "Maiden's Leap" - which looks just feasible, because of the lower level of the battlements on the second tower. History from Rampant Scotland website, well worth a visit, packed with pics and articles.

[Inverness castle.jpg]
Inverness castle.jpg

Comments: aerial photo,Inverness castle,Because of its location at a crossing point of the river Ness near its exit to the sea, Inverness has been an important location at least since the days when the capital of the Picts was probably near present-day Inverness. Several hundred years later, King Malcolm III (Canmore) destroyed a castle here which had belonged to Macbeth. The castle was captured by the English during the Wars of Independence but was eventually taken back by King Robert the Bruce in 1310. The castle was rebuilt around 1412 by Alexander, Earl of Mar (son of the infamous Wolf of Badenoch) erected a new building. During the long-running dispute between the Scottish monarchs in Edinburgh and the MacDonalds and their allies, Alexander, Lord of the Isles, plus 50 Highland chiefs, were summoned to Inverness Castle by King James I in 1427. The monarch immediately imprisoned them all until they pledged allegiance. Not that this lasted for long - the Lord of the Isles returned two years later and torched the town. His son captured the castle in 1455 and supported the Douglas family in their disputes with King James II. He eventually had to submit to King James III in 1476. By the mid-17th century the castle was in a poor state of repair and Cromwell built an alternative fortification nearer the mouth of the river (called "The Sconce", a Scots word for shelter from the wind). King Charles II ordered it to be destroyed in the 1660s, after the Restoration. The old castle (by now renamed Fort George) was blown up by the Jacobites after Culloden in 1746. The new Fort George was built at Ardesier and is still used by the British army. All that remains of the original castle in Inverness is a well - the present building was erected in 1835 on the original site. It is now used as the Sheriff Court and Police Department. history from Rampant Scotland website

Knock castle Skye 0809170396x.jpg

Comments: aerial photo Knock Castle, also known as Caisteal Chamuis (Castle Camus) is a former stronghold of the MacDonalds. It lies on the east coast of Sleat, approximately 5 miles north of Armadale on the Isle of Skye, south of Cnoc Uaine, on the eastern side of Knock Bay. Currently the castle is in ruins; it consists of an old 15th century keep of which one part, a window, remains to some height with traces of later buildings. The castle was constructed by the Clan MacLeod and later captured by the Clan MacDonald in the late 15th century. Custody of the castle passed between the two clans several times. It was remodelled in 1596 by the MacDonalds. By 1689 the castle was abandoned and started to decay. Most of the stones were then used for nearby buildings. From Wiki.

[Slains Castle 0804162420.jpg]
Slains Castle 0804162420.jpg

Comments: Aerial photo Slains castle,Located high above the precipitous cliffs of Buchan, to the east of Cruden Bay, 20 miles north of Aberdeen, the ruins of Slains Castle still looks impressive. "Old Slains" castle, a few miles away was destroyed by King James VI after the Hays had taken part in a rebellion in 1594. The 9th Hay Earl of Errol returned from exile in 1597 and began rebuilding and extending an original tower of Bowness, renaming it "New Slains" Castle. The Hays had owned the estate since the 14th century. It was expanded over the years to become more of a palace than a castle, particularly in 1664 when a corridor was built within the courtyard and again in 1707 when a new frontage was added. Large extensions were also made in 1836. At one time, despite its windswept position, there were extensive gardens. Dr Johnson and his biographer James Boswell visited Slains Castle in 1773 but it was Bram Stoker who really put the property on the map by being inspired to write his Dracula novel after staying nearby. At that time, the castle was not a ruin. Early drafts of Stoker's novel had Dracula coming ashore at Cruden Bay after his sea voyage from Transylvania. This was later changed to Whitby in Yorkshire for the final published work. The Hays lived in regal style in Slains until they sold the castle in 1916 to Sir Robert Ellerman, but by 1925 he had dismantled much of the property and he removed its roof to avoid paying taxes. Stirling castle 0806303701.jpg

Comments: Aerial photo Stirling castle. There may have been earlier forts on the volcanic plug in the Forth valley, but it was King Alexander I in early 12th century who built a chapel there and he probably died at Stirling in 1124. Later, Stirling was one of five Scottish castles passed over to Henry II of England in payment for the release of William the Lion. Although it was later returned to Scotland, King Edward I took over all the Scottish royal castles in 1291. Temporarily captured by William Wallace after the Battle of Stirling Bridge it returned to English hands. By 1313 Stirling was one of only three castles held by Edward II and it was when attempting to relieve the castle that Edward was defeated by Robert the Bruce at nearby Bannockburn in 1314. The castle was the backdrop to the murder of William, 8th Earl of Douglas by King James II. The castle was greatly expanded by Kings James IV and V - it is James V we have to thank for the Great Hall which has recently been restored to its former glory (see this building in the picture above the brightly painted one). Mary Queen of Scots was crowned in Stirling Castle in 1543 and her son, James VI was christened in the nearby parish church. James VI spent a lot of time at Stirling Castle and his first son, Prince Henry, was born there. But after the Union of the Crowns in 1603, the next royal visit was by King Charles II in 1650. Now owned by Historic Scotland, Stirling is second only to Edinburgh Castle in the number of visitors each year.

[Taymouth Castle 0809230490x.jpg]
Taymouth Castle 0809230490x.jpg

Comments: aerial photo, Taymouth Castle by Kenmore Scotland, was the seat of the Campbells of Breadalbane who were one of Scotland's greatest landowning families. At its height their estate extended to 437,696 acres and was over 100 miles long. From Aberfeldy it was possible to reach the west coast of Scotland without leaving the Breadalbane's land and at its core lay Taymouth, a vast baronial castle, built at the height of the family's power. Although the present building largely dates from the 19th century, Taymouth stands on the site of the ancient Balloch Castle which was built in 1550 for Sir Colin Campbell of Glenorchy. His son, known as Black Duncan of the Castles, was responsible for the erection or improvement of six castles on the Estate. Towards the end of the 17th century the family fell on hard times. Later the first Earl, known as a doubtful Jacobite and described as "as brave as a Spaniard, cunning as a fox, wise as a serpent and slippery as an eel", used these various talents to recover the family prosperity. By the turn of the 19th century the family fortunes had sufficiently improved to finance the erection of Taymouth Castle. The main core of Taymouth in many ways replicates Inverary, the seat of the Senior Campbell, Duke of Argyll, but with its large extensions and superb embellishments, is of a scale and quality unknown elsewhere in Scotland. The Breadalbane Estates were broken up shortly after the Great War. Much was sold to sporting tenants or local farmers and Taymouth itself was eventually purchased by The Taymouth Castle Hotel Company Ltd. Prior to the Second World War the castle was operated as a hotel, and at this time, the deer park was developed into a magnificent golf course The castle was requisitioned by the Government during the Second World War and was used as a convalescent home. After the war the Authorities turned it into a headquarters for Civil Defence Training in Scotland. For a short period it was used as a school for the children of American servicemen. It is now in private hands and not open to the public.

[castle Dunbeath- homes--Archaeology-scenery.jpg]
castle Dunbeath- homes--Archaeology-scenery.jpg

Comments: Aerial photo ,Dunbeath. The castle has stood on the rocky peninsula at Dunbeath since 1428 when the lands belonged to the Earl of Caithness. After passing through the hands of the Innes family, it became the property of the Clan Sinclair of Geanies through the marriage of the daughter of Alexander Sutherland to the first Sinclair Earl of Caithness. The Sinclairs replaced the existing structure with a four-storey tower house that forms part of the current castle in 1620. In 1650 Dunbeath was attacked and captured (along with Lady Sinclair) by James Graham, 1st Marquess of Montrose and not returned to the Sinclairs until the defeat of Montrose at the Battle of Carbisdale in 1650. The castle was extensively remodelled in the 17th century by Sir William Sinclair and again in 1853 and 1881. In 1945 after 325 years of occupation by the Sinclair Family, the castle was sold to Stuart Avery. History from Wiki. Aerial photo, Dunbeath, Caithness

In her story, the young woman is abducted by John Keith because he wanted her for her amazing beauty. She flung herself, or fell, from the highest tower to escape her abductors advances. This was in the late 14th or early 15th century and is said to have been the true beginning for all Feuding between the Gunns and Keiths. [castle Cawdor.jpg]
castle Cawdor.jpg

Comments: Aerial photo Cawdor castle,a well restored castle open to the public in North Scotland. The earliest documented date for the castle is 1454, the date a building license was granted to William, Thane of Cawdor (or Calder, as the name was sometimes spelled). However, some portions of the castle may precede that date. Architectural historians have dated the style of stonework in the oldest portion of the castle to approximately 1380. One curious feature of the castle is that it was built around a small, living holly tree, the remains of which may still be seen in the lowest level of the tower. Modern scientific testing has shown that the tree died in approximately 1372 (lending credence to the earlier date of the castle's first construction). Originally consisting only of the large tower (or keep), the castle was expanded numerous times in the succeeding centuries, with significant additions made in the 17th century and 19th century. The iron yett here was brought from nearby Lochindorb Castle around 1455 when the Scottish Privy Council instructed the Thane of Cawdor to dismantle Lochindorb after it had been forfeited by the Earl of Moray. from Wiki. Comments: aerial photo Craigston,Castle, Turriff, is a historic home of the Urquhart family. It was built 1604-1607 by John Urquhart of Craigfintry, known as the Tutor of Cromarty. The castle is composed of two main wings flanking the entrance and connected by an elevated arch, and surmounted by a richly corbelled parapet, regarded by many as one of the finest examples in Scotland. There are bases for corner turrets near the top corner of each wing, but the turrets themselves do not appear to have ever been completed. The wood carvings in the drawing room depict biblical themes and Clan Urquhart heraldic artefacts.from wiki.

[castle Delgatie 0710280674z.jpg]
castle Delgatie 0710280674z.jpg

Comments: aerial photo Delgatie castle, Most recently the home of the late Capt. Hay of Delgatie, Feudal Baron, the Castle has largely been in the Hay family for the last 650 years. It was taken from the Earl of Buchan after the Battle of Bannockburn in 1314, when Robert the Bruce routed the invading English army. Mary Queen of Scots stayed at Delgatie for three days after the Battle of Cirrichie in 1562. Her bedchamber is on view to the visitor. Like many Scottish castles, Delgatie was rebuilt in the 16th century. The invention of the siege gun necessitated greater fortifications, and the 1570 rebuilding provided 8-14 feet thick walls. The main tower dates from about 1100, while its final extension with the battlement walk above the string course was completed in 1579. Both wings were added in 1743 with the chapel and dovecote on the west and the kitchen and servants' quarters on the east. google for the castle to see details of visiting times etc

[castle Foulis-Archaeology-homes.jpg]
castle Foulis-Archaeology-homes.jpg

Comments: Five miles North East of Dingwall, this is a private large home. Clan Munro base, Foulis (Gaelic "Fo-glais" a streamlet) has of old been the home of Clan Munro. Acquired by a Munro Chief in the early Cl4th. Plans of the original castle are long since lost, but the grounds still contain the site of an C11th Mott (manmade mound topped by a wooden palisade). The present Castle dates from the middle of Cl8th containing within its attractive Georgian structure the remains of a much earlier and altogether different defensive keep. Sir Harry Munro returned after the 1745 Rising in which he lost both his father and uncle at the Battle of Falkirk, to find his ancient home destroyed by fire, and set about building the house you see today incorporating what he could of the old Cl6th keep. The courtyard pierced by three arches with its semi-octagonal tower dated 1754 hints at an earlier form of Scottish architecture, whilst the overall effect of the range of Cl8th domestic buildings, coachhouses, laundry, bakehouse, stables and well, shows a strong continental influence. see www.clanmunro.org

Seat of the Chiefs of Clan Menzies for over 400 years and importantly situated, it was involved in the turbulant history of the Highlands and here Bonnie Prince Charlie rested on his way to Culloden in 1746. Architecturally fascinating, it is a splendid example of the transition between earlier rugged fortress and later mansion house.

[kilvarock castle.jpg]
kilvarock castle.jpg

Comments: aerial photo,Kilvarock castle, near Croy,Scotland. The first six generations of the Rose family at Kilravock lived in a house, probably part stone, part wood, situated at the top of the hill by the Cedar of Lebanon. In the 14th century, and for more than a century after, lawlessness abounded and clans and families schemed against one another. The period of strong Scottish monarchy had gone and rival claimants to the throne appeared. The wooden houses, sufficient for times of comparative peace, now passed away and by the end of the 15th century the skyline of the Nairn valley was marked by the grim battlements of castles at Rait, Cawdor, Kilravock and Daviot. The Kilravock tower was built by the 7th Baron under licence granted by John, Lord of the Isles and Earl of Ross, on 18th February 1460. There is a tradition that the architect was a servant of James III called Cochran, who also designed Cawdor Castle. In any case, Cawdor was built a few years earlier, and the same mason’s marks are to be found in the doorway stonework of both castles. The mansion house part was added in 1553 by the tenth baron, mainly to accommodate his household of seventeen female dependants - sisters and daughters. Notable because family living here never kept a warrior clan and by using diplomacy never fought a battle .Drop into the website for more details and also how to stay here, http://www.kilravockcastle.com/index.html
