[castle Dunbeath- homes--Archaeology-scenery.jpg]
castle Dunbeath- homes--Archaeology-scenery.jpg

Comments: Aerial photo ,Dunbeath. The castle has stood on the rocky peninsula at Dunbeath since 1428 when the lands belonged to the Earl of Caithness. After passing through the hands of the Innes family, it became the property of the Clan Sinclair of Geanies through the marriage of the daughter of Alexander Sutherland to the first Sinclair Earl of Caithness. The Sinclairs replaced the existing structure with a four-storey tower house that forms part of the current castle in 1620. In 1650 Dunbeath was attacked and captured (along with Lady Sinclair) by James Graham, 1st Marquess of Montrose and not returned to the Sinclairs until the defeat of Montrose at the Battle of Carbisdale in 1650. The castle was extensively remodelled in the 17th century by Sir William Sinclair and again in 1853 and 1881. In 1945 after 325 years of occupation by the Sinclair Family, the castle was sold to Stuart Avery. History from Wiki. Aerial photo, Dunbeath, Caithness

[castle Foulis-Archaeology-homes.jpg]
castle Foulis-Archaeology-homes.jpg

Comments: Five miles North East of Dingwall, this is a private large home. Clan Munro base, Foulis (Gaelic "Fo-glais" a streamlet) has of old been the home of Clan Munro. Acquired by a Munro Chief in the early Cl4th. Plans of the original castle are long since lost, but the grounds still contain the site of an C11th Mott (manmade mound topped by a wooden palisade). The present Castle dates from the middle of Cl8th containing within its attractive Georgian structure the remains of a much earlier and altogether different defensive keep. Sir Harry Munro returned after the 1745 Rising in which he lost both his father and uncle at the Battle of Falkirk, to find his ancient home destroyed by fire, and set about building the house you see today incorporating what he could of the old Cl6th keep. The courtyard pierced by three arches with its semi-octagonal tower dated 1754 hints at an earlier form of Scottish architecture, whilst the overall effect of the range of Cl8th domestic buildings, coachhouses, laundry, bakehouse, stables and well, shows a strong continental influence. see www.clanmunro.org
